TRUTH , LIES AND U.S. , U.K. AND AUS INTEL
By now , the beginning of June , 2003 , questions are beginning to be asked about the veracity of the claims that Iraq did possess Weapons of Mass Destruction ( WMD ) . As we all will remember , this was the justification for attacking a sovereign country , albeit run by thugs , murderers etc . ( Burma , Zimbabwe and others also come to mind in this respect ) .
Most now say good riddance , but the fact that the cause appears to have been false is being pushed aside . This has set a very dangerous precedent in international relations . The truth must be found for the sake of our future safety . In any international confrontation , accurate and timely INTEL is essential ( see Cuban Missile Crisis ) .
The only conceivable reason that so light a force was used to attack Iraq was that INTEL showed that Iraq was a soft target after years of sanctions . ( It is possible that a " back channel " deal was done to get the Iraqi regime to go , but this highly doubtful . )
On the face of it , the WMD claim is another intelligence ( INTEL ) failure , just as Bali , September 11 , East Timor and Peal Harbor were . The present leaders , Bush , Blair and Howard show little interest in formally investigating the causes for the first three attacks , as they affected their countries . They fear for what would be found . One could view the WMD claim as treasonable if the INTEL was changed for public consumption . This is not the first time that INTEL has been " modified " , see the GATES PANEL REPORT and more generally MISSILE WARS : THE THREAT - IS IT REAL ? . ( Both from www.pbs.org . )
We would suggest that the main reason for this is the way in which intelligence gathering and analysis has been politicised , under resourced and drawn away from the search for the truth . These factors also have had an effect on the morale and efficiency of the intelligence community .
The way in which the " War " against terrorism has been most recently conducted is at best incompetent and at worst also treasonable . Only time and any future attacks will tell the truth .
A War is essentially a collection of wars fought simultaneously in different Theatres , in the sea , on the land and in the air etc , including intelligence , propaganda , logistical and wars .
But , in order of priority in a war effort , medical services are the most important ( mostly preventable non battle casualties always exceed battle causalities ) and it is more efficient to patch up those who are there rather than train and transport replacements .
INTEL is next because it is ( or should be ) the eyes and ears of the war . A small force , with good INTEL can easily defeat a larger force , the Battle of Britain in 1940 and the use of Ultra in WW II are examples of this happening .
The third in this order are the actual forces employed fighting the war .
In Australia ( as in the U.S. ), INTEL has been severely degraded by political interference . It is of the utmost importance that intelligence organisations are properly resourced and allowed a free rein to do their work . Without this another attack , without warning , is almost inevitable .
The Australian Government has taken it's eye off the local region . The possibility of a Islamic state including most of the states to our immediate North has not been taken seriously nor has the possibility of the dissolution of Indonesia . The U.S. relies on Australian INTEL in the region and another East Timorese style massacre could easily happen .
The situation in Korea is of major concern and ranks equally with the Middle East as a flashpoint .
For all of these reasons , the world and the three countries mentioned above should take a long look at the quality of the INTEL they are presently receiving .
During the Six Day War between Israel and the Arab States , the American intelligence ship USS Liberty was attacked for 75 minutes in international waters by Israeli aircraft and motor torpedo boats . Thirty-four men died and 172 were wounded .
............... The Congressional Medal of Honor was awarded to the ship's Captain . "
